Department of IT
Department of Information Technology, Chandigarh Administration was established and made functional in March, 2000 with a view to cater to the IT needs of all the Departments / Offices under Chandigarh Administration. The main objective is to implement I.T. Policy for Chandigarh Administration in addition to implementation and management of various e-governance initiatives of the Government of India. Another mandate of the Department of IT is to provide policy level direction to Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh (SPIC) for implementing various plans of the Administration for promoting the IT industry in Chandigarh besides, implementation and management of various e-governance initiatives of the Administration. The Chairperson of the Society is the Adviser to the Administrator while Secretary IT is the President of the Executive Body of SPIC.
Department of IT has also been entrusted with the responsibility of promoting the IT Park area for IT Companies. The Department of IT as a nodal department of Chandigarh Administration has been managing issues related to IT park Chandigarh. Further, in order to nurture entrepreneurship, an Entrepreneurial Development Centre (EDC) building has been built under the ASIDE Scheme. Department of IT is catering to the requirement of Young Entrepreneurs and Small and Medium Enterprises through EDC building.
The Department of Information Technology, UT, Chandigarh is engaged in promotion of application of information technology for the benefit of the society through implementation of programmes such as e- Governance, Promotion of investment in IT/ITES, extending training facilities in IT and promotion of IT infrastructure in Chandigarh.
Digital India is a programme launched by Government of India to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. It is centred on 3 key areas - Digital Infrastructure as a Utility to Every Citizen, Governance & Services on Demand and Digital Empowerment of Citizens. It is an umbrella Programme – covering many departments. Department of IT has been entrusted with the mandate of undertaking various projects under Digital India in Chandigarh.
